Career & Calling

Why this spread

The Career & Calling spread is five cards on the work you're actually doing. Not the job title. Not the version of your role you put in your bio. The real shape of it. Where you stand right now. What you're carrying that helps. What's getting in the way. What's opening up. What you do next. One question. Five positions to read it from.

Pull this one when the question is about work and it's bigger than yes or no. A move you're weighing. A role you've outgrown. A direction that won't quite resolve. The spread maps where you stand. What's working for you. What's in the way. The opening you might be missing. The move that follows.

The Spread

Where you stand

The actual ground you're standing on at work.

The first card reads where you actually are. Not the role on the org chart. Not the title in your bio. The real position you're working from right now. The responsibilities you're holding. The rooms you're in. The weight you're carrying. Everything else in the spread reads against this card.

Strengths

What you're already carrying that helps.

What's working in your favor. Skills you've built. Patterns of yours that already pay off. Sometimes things you don't count as strengths because they come easy. This card names the real assets in play. The part of you the situation is asking you to lean on, not the thing you'd have to go acquire first.

Blocker

What's standing between you and the move.

The thing in the way. Sometimes external. A person, a structure, a market that isn't moving. More often internal. A habit, a fear, an old story you keep running about yourself and your work. This card names the obstacle without softening it. Most of what follows in the spread is about what you do once you can see it clearly.

Opportunity

The opening you haven't quite named yet.

What's already moving toward you that you might be missing. A door that's open. A conversation you haven't followed up on. Work that's quietly waiting for you to claim it. The opportunity card isn't a guarantee. It's a thing to look at more carefully than you have been, before it closes or goes to someone else.

Next move

The next concrete step from where you stand.

Not the five-year plan. The next move. The one thing you can do in the actual week ahead that moves the situation forward. This card reads where the other four point. Once you've seen where you stand, what helps, what's in the way, and what's opening, the move usually shows itself.

When to pull

Pull the Career & Calling spread when the question is about your work and it has shape. A role you're considering. A move you've been weighing. A direction that won't quite settle. Anything bigger than yes or no, smaller than your entire life.

It's not the spread for a quick gut read or a daily check-in. It's for the work question you've been carrying for a week or a month. The one you keep almost asking and then changing the subject.

If the question is really a choice between two specific options, try the Decision spread instead. If it's about the whole shape of your life and where it's heading, the Celtic Cross is the longer read.

Methodology note

  • Where you stand · Strengths, read together. Your strength is read against where you stand. Not what kind of person it makes you. What it does for you in the room you're actually in.

  • Where you stand · Blocker, read together. The blocker is read against the same ground. Where in your situation it sits, and what it's stopping.

  • Blocker · Opportunity, read together. The opportunity is read on the other side of the blocker. Once the block is clear, the opening is usually what it was standing in front of.

  • Next move · Where you stand · Strengths · Blocker · Opportunity, read together. The next move is read out of the other four. Where you stand, what helps, what's in the way, what's opening. The step is the one those add up to, not one anyone could take.

Questions

No. The Career & Calling spread reads any work question with weight. Wanting a promotion you haven't asked for. Wondering whether the role you have still fits. Deciding whether to push on a side project. Figuring out what you actually want to do with your week. Not just the job-change moments.
